Life Skills Reading, Writing, and Jobs: Cover Letters - Step by Step!

This lesson is scaffolded to support students with creating their own individualized cover letter. I created this PRINT AND GO download out of a necessity to help teach my students a very important life skill that often gets overlooked in classrooms. Even though this would work for any teenager, I use it in my special education classroom to get resistant writers to start the writing process on a more personal level.

This cover letter activity is strongly centered around the writing process for STUDENTS. I included a framework that is relevant to them (ex: emphasizing a mock job hunt). This makes the activity so much more functional! 

A fully editable cover letter template is included with your purchase. All students have to do is change the highlighted text in green with the answers they write down on the included worksheets. At the end of the unit, I love to print a finalized copy of each student's cover letter. We add it to their portfolios and send a digital copy home as well. Many parents and students have gone on to say how helpful this activity has been long after they have graduated from my classroom.
